The West Point City Council unanimously approved the city’s 2019 budget in a short city council meeting Monday night. The city will operate with a general fund budget of $6,140,040 in 2019, and an overall budget of $19,525,995 between the general fund and enterprise funds.

The West Point City Council met briefly on Monday night to discuss two pieces of new business. In short order, the city council voted to adopt a Freeport Exemption resolution as well as the proposed millage rate resolution, both of which passed unanimously.

Four new police officers were sworn in Monday in front of the West Point City Council. The officers were sworn in by Judge Wesley Leonard, surrounded by the full city council and a nearly-full council chamber.

By mid-afternoon on Tuesday, it looked like a summer thunderstorm might wash out the West Point Police Department’s National Night Out program that had been planned for 6:30 p.m. at John Hoggs Park. A storm appeared imminent but thankfully did not materialize, and the block-party style event proceeded as planned.

The WellStar Medical Group building on 10th Street, originally a Commercial Bank and Trust structure, was only supposed to be at its current location temporarily when it opened in 2006.
